A unicorn to me at least. First generation V70R AWD. The ultimate sleeper dad-mobile! I’ve only ever seen one first gen prior to this one, and it was FWD. There was a little old lady driving it, so I’m assuming it was an auto, but who knows. Could be one bad ass grandma! I will own one of these eventually, once I can actually find one for sale... Anyways, back to the grind now. As you all were.

With ya on these - saw one a month ago on the highway and knew I wanted one someday.

Used to have a red V70 AWD (1998, not originally R) with the boost turned up and some suspension mods to make it about on par with these. It was fun, it was not, by any means slow, but mostly it was very comfortable, got TERRIBLE fuel economy and managed to be simultaneously the fastest-moving and least-likely-to-be-ticketed vehicle on my morning commute every day (it was also aces at spin-in-place snow- and gravel-donuts :) not quite enough power/too much traction for good pavement donuts though)... then the PCV system got clogged and it blew all the oil seals out the engine... all. of. them.

P.S. Maybe Not a Real R. Real R’s have a unique spoiler.
though it’s possible this one has been removed...
edit: apparently the spoiler was optional, or perhaps there was a “spoiler delete” option, in any case, I have never seen a real R without the spoiler, but apparently they DO exist.

I’m pretty sure the spoiler was optional as I’ve seen quite a few online without it. From my basic knowledge and understanding of the variations of R cars over the years, I do believe this one is a pretty basic ‘98 judging by the aforementioned lack of spoiler and the standard 16" wheels instead of the optional 17"s. Don’t know for sure though.

yeah, I found that too... the internet says it was indeed optional, but I personally have never seen a *REAL* R without the spoiler. As a previous owner of a *FAKE* R, without the spoiler-and traveling in those circles- I have seen quite a few fake Rs.

Second gen V70R is one of my all time favorite cars. Favorite wagon I'd say.

Yep. I’ve been looking at getting a new daily lately and thought I had my heart set on either an E39 M5 or W211 E55 AMG. But seeing the V70R again has made me question those, lol.

Sounds like a fun ride! But ouch on the seals. Usually those Volvo engines are pretty bulletproof. It’s everything else that breaks, hahaha.

Oh I can only imagine. Not too many people really know about the R cars, so I would think it’d be pretty easy to pass it off as one to those who have no clue, lol. There’s actually a guy around here that has a C70 with an R badge stuck on it and the second gen R Pegasus wheels. Gives me a good laugh every time I see it.

Agreed. Second gen. V70R manual in Flash Green Metallic and the Atacama interior is my ultimate dream wagon. Basically I want the IPD shop car, lol.

Apparently its a danger on the low-pressure-turbo models when you turn the boost up, or get sludgy oil. If you spend some time on the Googles you'll find quite a few 2.4 LPTs with pcv issues. Mine was not alone in it's choice to blow all its oil out of the main seals and cam seals. Mine *WAS* relatively alone in that I had no trouble with the viscous couple, angle-drive, or rear differential the whole 80k miles I owned it (bought used with just over 120k on it)

Brings back memories.
I owned one! Briefly. We didn’t like each other though. And mine became FWD when the driveshaft fell off.

Mine didn’t have one so I think it was an option to delete it. For more of a sleeper look!

Pretty sure there was one for sale in electronic bay. Not sure if it was AWD, though.
